How to reinvent your business to stay competitive in a challenging economy

The last couple of years were very challenging for entrepreneurs. One of the main issues, besides just staying in business, is how to maintain a competitive edge. Many small business owners had to lower their prices but other reinvented their businesses to still attract new clients. If you lower your price, you will need more clients to make the same amount of money were already making. Is that the best solution? There are ways to work smarter not harder!

How to attract more clients without losing money and staying competitive.

1. Repackage your services or products. For example, let’s say you sell your physical product for $299, you can now offer the digital version for half of the price. You won’t have to change anything on your marketing just redirect people to a different webpage and since it is less expensive, you may get more clients. You’re offering a new and abridged version of the product at a lower cost because you aren’t paying for the physical version. The most important part of this equation is to follow-up with the people who bought the digital version so you could sell them later the more complete physical version at your regular price. If people like your program, they will be more willing to buy again from you.

Another example, if you work one-on-one with clients, consider offering a group session at a reduced price. Your clients will each pay a little less but since you will be working with a group at the end of the hour you find you’ve more than made up the difference. For instance if you have one client who pays $250 per one hour session, 4 sessions equal $1000, if you offer a group session at $150 per person per hour and you have 5 people to a group, 4 sessions now equal $3000. At the end of the sessions, you have worked the same amount but triple your revenue.

2. Work with a more specific niche. Target clients with a very specific problem that you can solve and offer a solution different form your competitors. What do you offer that makes you and your product unique? For example, if you have been targeting women business owners try honing your focus to working mom entrepreneurs if you are a mom. Based on your experiences you may have unique solutions to balance their lives with their businesses. Sharing your unique success stories and tips can make you indispensable!

In one of my business I work exclusively with French speaking entrepreneurs starting businesses in the US. I was in their shoes seven years ago, when I moved. I know their problems, obstacles, frustrations, we have the same culture. With my knowledge of the American culture from a French point of view I can help them to adapt their business, teach them market the “American way”, and the steps to start and success a business here. Develop your communication and services around the people you are targeting who can relate to your experience.

3. Sell differently. If you used to sell via internet, your website, your blog, how can you sell using other media? Did you ever use direct mail? Lot of people think that direct mail is not working anymore, but combine with everything you do online, you raise you conversation rate. People don’t always have the time to read your email or they are blocked by their spam filters and don’t see you offer. A post card, a brochure or a simple letter can make a big difference. But remember don’t just send one card and wait for your phone to ring, you will need to send your post card campaign at least three times in a short period of time (maximum 3 months) for people to pay attention to it and then act on it.

In order to stay competitive in your business you really need to step back and look at what you offer and how you offer it. By just tweaking your offers you can attract more clients. Look at what your competitors are doing, see what is missing in their offers and use this lack of services to make a difference.

Are business women more motivated?

Are women business owners or solo-entrepreneurs, are we more focus and motivated than men? I don’t know but what I know is that women love to work with other women and as a community.

 
Each time I started a mastermind group I’ve had a majority of women sign up immediately. When a woman starts a project other women are eager to contribute or lend their support. I recently joined a group of women on Linkedin that started a “FaceBook Fan Page Exchange’. Within just weeks the exchange became viral and hundreds of women joined the tribe.
Helping each others is more natural for women than for men, who usually prefer to work on their own. If you look at networking organizations you will find a group in almost every industry: women in video, women in communication, women in writing, Women Empower Network of Executive Women, ewomen Network, Downtown Women’s Club, Women’s Business Mastermind, Women Helping Women Mastermind, Women Prosperity Network, just to name a few.
If you search Women networking groups on Google you get 1,720,000 results, on the other end, I don’t know that many groups or organizations, which emphasize that they are exclusively for men entrepreneurs. Either groups are for both or specifically for women.Why women are more committed to work with each other?
It is probably because they don’t see each other as competitors, but as offering complementary services and because working with a group is much more fun. Many women have a ‘mothering instinct’, always ready to protect others as their own. Women are more likely to remember things like birthdays or anniversaries and will be more willing to send a greeting card, which shows that they care about others. Women take care of their businesses as they take care of their family.
Women owned businesses tend to offer services and products to help others to facilitate their own lives. As a coach when I create a product or program my goal is to help my clients make more money, spend less time working and help them with more than just their professional lives. I help them with their personal lives providing tips on how to spend less time working so that they will be able to spend more time with their family or friends, while in their professional lives they are gaining more clients and prospects.
I do lots of partnerships and joint ventures in my business for years, 95% are with women, it comes more natural and I know that lots of women feel the same way.

How to become THE expert in your field through your social media presence

It has never been so easy to become an expert in your field. The explosion of social media can make your product or service viral in record time. You can be known as the go to in your area of expertise by using the tools at your fingertips without breaking the bank!

Before social media and the evolution of the internet starting a business was a long, arduous procedure. You had to advertise in newspapers, magazines, the phone book… which cost a fortune. To stand out from the crowd you had to have special advertisements – usually using an expensive graphic designer or settling for the small and fairly useless small print ads. Not to mention trying to get the chance to be interviewed by a local newspaper, or do public speaking. To have any edge you had to repeat all of these steps and more to eventually (after spending thousands of dollars and time) be known as an expert… maybe.

Today, even if you are somebody like me, who doesn’t like public speaking and are looking for other ways to be known, there is hope. Thanks to Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, blogging, articles marketing, press releases, and video marketing you can effectively develop your online presence. By consistently delivering valuable information in your area of business, your story has a greater chance of being picked up by people in general and also by the press, local, national and even international resources. Implementing the right social media strategies and online presence will allow you to go from a local status to an international status.

Authoring a book can give you another level of exposure and it will be easier to contact the press or magazines to be featured. A press release announcing your book tour can alert local print and TV channels in every city you will be speaking. If you don’t like public speaking you can opt to be interviewed on radio stations across the country.

Using all media available today, and creating a buzz around your product or service, create credibility and attract more clients to you and you will never have to chase clients again. Plus as an expert, people will be more than happy to pay for expert services and you can increase your prices to your worth. Wouldn’t you like to enjoy a whole new list of new clients knocking on your door? Thanks to my exposure through social media during the past few years, I have had interviews published in various magazines in the US, France and Canada. I participated to in two book marketing compilations in India. Then went on to become a columnist for two business publications. I have also been interviewed by a few TV stations. All of these contacts have pursued me through social media!

Is Your Networking Working?

What a big week! I launched two new partnerships. It is a lot of work, but so exciting.

I did my very first video-conference. I was a little bit scared being on the big screen at first, but the excitement of being recognized by the Chamber of Commerce of Martinique (in the French Caribbean) got me through my fears. This new experience showed me the potential of video conferencing, I was able to reach this international expo as a guest speaker, without leaving my Miami office.

My business partner who is in Paris and I are starting a monthly breakfast overthere for people looking to start a business in the US. With video conferencing I will be able to attend without the expense of traveling to Paris every month.
