Networking on Shoestring Budget

Upon starting a business most entrepreneurs don’t develop an extended budget. They often make the mistake of not having a business plan and having virtually no clue how long it will take to break even. Now, with the ability to get free exposure and skip most of the cost of advertising, you can start almost any business on a shoestring budget. Your business can become international via the internet without you even having to leave the house. In just 5 minutes you can buy a domain name for $10 a year, sign up for an hosting company for $10 a month, start your blog for free and start posting to promote your products or services.

You don’t need a fancy blog, you just need good content. It is always ideal to have a fancy design or a custom made website, but in the meantime there are so many free themes and templates available today that you will probably find one that you want without investing a dime. You can always invest later on a custom nice.

The only thing you will really need to start is a squeeze page or landing page and a blog. You can invest on a website later. Signing up to social media sites like Facebook, LinkedIn, Plaxo, Twitter and others are free and get you exposure, allowing you to reach new friends, prospects and clients. Your friends are some of your greatest allies. With your squeeze page, blog and profile on various social media sites you can start promoting your business or services right away. Build your list of targeted potential clients and make sure to follow-up by email. To follow up most efficiently you will need an autoresponder starting at $15 a month. You now have most of your marketing tools in place for less than a $50 a month.

Once your online presence is set up, you will need to face the world and attend networking events. Select the event that caters to your target market. Otherwise, you will be paying to attend events that will never result in clients.

The one marketing tool you can’t skimp on is your business card. Even if you are on a meager budget do not print your business card on your own. It won’t look professional at all. Remember, you only have 10 to 30 second to make the right impression so don’t ruin those precious seconds with a haphazard business card. If people see that you can’t invest a few dollars or a few hours of your time on a professional representation of yourself, they will not invest, trust or do business with you.

There are plenty of resources online that offer 250 business cards for roughly $30. I don’t suggest that you buy more than 250 cards at a time, because you want to use the back of your cards as a promotional tools also, and change the message on the back on a regular basis. Last but not least, don’t try to do everything on your own, because you will end up doing very little during the day and not having enough time to promote your business.

Having a virtual assistant, even when just starting off, will help you tremendously. If you hire somebody even just for 5 hours a month to start that’s 5 hours you can concentrate on your core business instead of on paperwork. You can check online on Craigslist for example to find a virtual assistant for $10 a hour. Don’t see this as an expense but as an investment. The $100 that you will invest in your assistant will allow you to bring a lot more money since you will have more time for your clients.

You definitely can start your business on a shoestring, but be careful, this is just a temporary situation, if you want your business to grow fast, you will need to investment more at some point, in material, a new website, nicer promotional marketing tools as postcards or brochures and last but not least in continuing education. Only 10% of small business owners invest in classes, programs or coaching programs to take their business to the next level. If you are not ready to reach that goal at some point you won’t run a successful business but just a hobby.

12 Years in Business Already

As you know, last week I spent 3 incredible days at the Enterprising Women Event in Miami. I met Ali Brown, my mentor for 5 years, for the first time in person! Check out the photo here

I also met a number of high profile women entrepreneurs. It was great to get the chance to share our experiences, tips and stories of success with each other. The women who received an Award including Ali, range between 1 to 25 million dollars revenue and there are actually a lot to learn from them. The exchange of information with those women gave me a great boost of confidence to take my business to the next level.
The partnerships that can be made from meeting people at that kind of events are an integral part of my networking plan. Stay tuned for new ideas, suggestions and offers in the next few months.

I also have a milestone moment.
In the next few days, I will be celebrating my 12 year anniversary of being in business for myself. I started my first business in Paris, France on April 1st, 1998. I still remember when I quit my job as a sales manager on Friday evening and started my own business the following Monday morning! I didn’t have savings, clients, entrepreneurial experience or support. In fact, everyone around me said I was crazy and tried to convince me to keep my job, continue to get a pay check each month and be happy for the way things were going.
I am so happy I didn’t listen to them and listened to myself instead! 12 years later, I not only realized my dream of having a business and being able to move to the US, but I also started 2 additional businesses later and my portfolio is still growing. Not to mention the freedom of being my own boss; that is a priceless perk.
I am celebrating this 12 year anniversary even after the last 2 challenging economic years. Most of my friends, who 12 years ago said I was crazy, have now lost their jobs and are in a very difficult situation right now. The lesson learned, when you are ready to jump don’t listen to anybody. Just remember what Henry Ford said “If you think you can do a thing or think you can’t do a thing, you’re right.” In April 1998, I knew I was right, and I proved it.
To celebrate my 12 years anniversary, I’m holding a special offer as a way to say THANK YOU to all of my readers and clients, all the people who trusted me and followed me for years and to all of you who recently jumped on board.
Come back on Monday to discover my special offer, in the mean time have a wonderful weekend.

Article Marketing: How to Attract Your Target Market 24/7 – Part II

penRead “Article Marketing: How to attract your target market 24/7” – Part I Here

Ok You wrote some articles now what? How can you attract clients from your articles?

1. Submit your articles on articles directories. If you do a search online you will find hundreds of them. Most of them are free.

2. Post your advice on your blog. This is free.

3. Tweet your tips using Twitter, Facebook, Plaxo, Linkedin, and other social media. Always use an invitation to your website or blog so they can see more articles, sign up for your newsletter and learn about your services. It’s free.

4. Post your articles on groups on Facebook or Linkedin. It’s free.

5. Post your articles on forums that your target market uses. You want them to know you are the expert. And once again, it’s free.

6. Publish your articles on your weekly newsletter. It is free.

7. Trade article publishing. Ask people who have the same target as you, but are not your competitors to publish your articles in their newsletter. Then do the same for them. For every person you trade with, you will expose yourself as an expert to another list! And it’s free!

Ok, I just gave you 7 free ways to use your articles and get free online exposure. I just saved you thousand of dollars on the cost of your marketing promotion!

Your articles don’t have to be long. You can write articles between 300 to 500 words. If you are like me and have a tendency to write more than 1000 words each time, don’t worry, keep writing when you have the inspiration. When you’re done, you will find that you can divide your articles into 2 or 3 segments and post them individually. Make sure to include keywords on your title and each paragraph to have a better ranking on Google and other search engines. But don’t obsess about key words, you don’t want to waste time by worrying over each one.

You’ve posted your suggestions, tips, and advise on directories, blogs, or forums. Now how do you attract your clients?

Write a compelling title to hook your readers is a key to success. Make sure your title defines what your clients and prospects are going to learn from you. There is a resource box, or “About the Author” paragraph that is imperative to fill out at the end of each of your articles. It introduces you to the readers and sends traffic to your website and squeeze pages.

A squeeze page, or landing page, serves the sole purpose of collecting your prospects’ names and email addresses to add to your list. It is best to offer something to get them to give you correct information. Offer them a free report or MP3 of your promo CD. Before your clients really know you, all they care about is what you can do for them. So show them! Give them a little bit of your expertise, define how you can solve their problems.

Why should you give them something? Aren’t you supposed to be making money? Well, people like free stuff and they need incentive to take action and you need to earn their trust and prove that you are an expert before they will buy your product. They need to see “what’s in it for me”, otherwise they will not be willing to give you their real contact information.

Each time you post one of your articles your sole purpose is to build your list. You do this by attracting your target market to your website/squeeze page to give your their information so you could build a list of prospects. Once you have your list, you will be able to communicate with all of those people later by email on a regular basis. You end up with real potential clients who will continue to learn more about you, your expertise and with whom you will build a trusting relationship. As a future point, when they are ready, they will buy from you because you are THE expert in your field; you are their go-to guy/gal to solve their problems.

When done strategically article marketing will allow you to attract clients 24/7 without selling anything but just giving valuable information to your readers on a regular basis. You don’t have to sound like a salesman to get your clients!

Article Marketing: How to Attract Your Target Market 24/7 – Part I

bureau2Article marketing is one of the best tools to promote your business and attract your target market.

Writing articles demonstrate your expertise in your field, and will showcase you as the go to guy/gal in your field.

Whatever business you are in, you can offer your clients suggestion, advice and valuable information to help them to solve their challenges. As an added benefit for giving them some of your knowledge, you will demonstrate that you are the right person to go to to solve their problems.

For example: let’s say you have a carpet store. You can write articles on how to keep carpet clean for a life time, or how to maintain the carpet’s original color, or even tips on cleaning particular stains (like red wine and pet accidents). Your target market will know that you not only sell carpet, but you care about how your clients even after you’ve made a sale.

Another example: You run a day care program. You can write about managing activities for kids under four, advice for handling the stress of leaving your child in someone’s care for the first time, or how to help your child socialize with other kids his or her age.

In my Mastermind Group one gentleman owns a Marshal Arts School. His articles give pointers on how children can learn to protect themselves, manage everyday stress and also explain to the parents how marshal arts training helps grow healthy self-esteem.

Again, whatever business you are in, you have a lot of information already that you can create articles and tips from. I hear my people say “but Biba, I’m not a writer!” when I tell my clients to integrate a steady stream of articles into their marketing plan.

There are three things I tell them that change their minds:

1. English is not my first language and I write various articles a month; if I can do it so can you! You have no excuses not to jot down tidbits of your knowledge.

2. If you are passionate about your business you can probably speak for hours about it with no problem at all. Put your thoughts on paper or tape record your ideas, and when it’s time to sit down at the computer, transcribe them. When you take a tape recorder or use the voice notes program on your cell phone, it’s a very easy and non-stressful way to record your thoughts as they come. writing articles. Actually when I started writing articles few years ago after a NY publisher convinced me for more than a year, the first article took me about 3 hours to write! The second only took one hour. After that I was on a roll and I couldn’t stop writing! I ended up compiling my ideas into my book “Start Your Dream Business Today“.

3. Years ago, one of my mentors gave me some of the greatest advice I ever received: when a prospect or a client asks a question by email and you take the time to answer him with knowledge that you have accrued, you can reformat those answers into an article. It works like this: take the question, put it in your own words, make it your title and then take your knowledge to explain your answer at length. You’ve probably even answered the same question before in a different way. Think back and use your alternate explanations. Then voila! The article was there all along, you wrote it without even realizing it!

Use the strategy that fits your style best and use it over and over again. Make it a goal (and stick to it) to write at least one article a month for the first few months. Once you get used to the pace, you can take 15 minutes to 1/2 hour each week to write an article. With all this knowledge and expertise, you will be known as the go-to person in your field.

I know what you’re going to ask next. Isn’t this going to cost me a fortune? Not if you use my strategies, it isn’t! You can attract your target market 24/7 for no cost at all!

My American Idol!

If you’ve been on my list for a while you have surely heard me speak about one of my mentors, Ali Brown, on a regular basis. Before I moved to the US in 2003, networking, let alone coaching was not even part of my vocabulary. We didn’t
use coaches in France as they are widely used in the US. In 2004 a friend introduced me to Ali Brown via newsletter, but it took another two years before I purchased and used her products.

Them I met Adam Urbanski and Raymon Aaron (whom I started a 17-month program with). For the past few years I have had the pleasure of working with Ali, Adam and Raymon. Since their strategies are different, I have taken the opportunity to implement a mixture of them in numerous ways to grow my business.

Now that the internet and social media have taken front row seats in networking and coaching, I am now also working with some famous internet marketers guys to learn new strategies.

But I have to confess, Ali was always my favorite, and after working with her online and using her products and programs, I will finally meet her in person next week while attending the “Enterprising Women of the Year Awards” in Miami, where Ali is a nominee to receive a prestigious award for her contributions in her field. I feel like I am going to see my idol.

Not only am I super excited to finally meet her, but also to be a part of celebration of entrepreneurial women, who like me built their businesses around their networks.

These kinds of events are important to meet people and also to create  important partnerships because you know that you won’t just be exchanging business cards… you already have a special bond created by a common theme.

I plan to tell you everything happened during this event and will be excited to learn new strategies that I will pass on to you.

Are you in the Miami area? Check this special event and come and join me, along with hundreds of other women like minded entrepreneurs, to grow you network.
Hope to see you there – Check the program and RSVP here

How to Maximize the Benefits of a Networking Event?

nms-connecting2Everyone needs to network: entrepreneurs, small business owners, job seekers! But does everyone maximize the benefits of networking?

The purpose of networking is to build relationships so you will get leads from someone you know, or from someone who knows someone you know. When you attend a networking event the purpose is to meet business people from various industries to get exposure.

What networking is not?

Networking is not a numbers game; you need to focus on quality and not on quantity. Some people think that they had a successful event when they have collected 30, 40 or more business cards, but they are missing the real point. How many of these 30 or 40 people will you be able to follow-up? How many of these 30 or 40 will follow-up with you? What is the purpose to collect a huge number of business cards that will end up in a shoe-box on one of your shelves?

Networking is not a place to sell. You have to be prepared to give your elevator pitch to introduce yourself, not give a sales pitch. If you attend an event expecting to find a client to close a sale right away, chances are you will be very disappointed. Furthermore the other attendees might not appreciate your attitude.

What networking is?

Networking is more than just shaking hands and collecting business cards. It is about building relationships and being committed to help other business professionals. It is about the quality of your contacts and not the amount of your contacts.

It is about consistency. The best is to belong to two or three groups, attend their events regularly, get to know the other members, and in exchange they will get to know you and trust you. When you see the same people over and over you develop a strong and relationship with them. The benefit of building relationships with a committed group of people will result in new leads for your business.

It is about patience. The benefit will not appear overnight, and this is why you need to follow up with your contacts. Networking is like dating, one meeting is not enough to know someone. It will probably take some time, some meetings, some lunches or some drinks before you really start doing business together.

Here are some tips on how to maximize the benefits of a networking event: Know your goals. Are you looking for leads, partners, new clients, services?
* Bring your business cards and a pen to take notes on the back of the cards you receive.
* Have an effective 15 to 30 second elevator pitch. Learn how to sell yourself before your services or products. People want to hear about you first and when they know you and trust you, they will buy your services or refer you to someone else.
* Have a brochure and/or a web site. Some people will probably want to hear more about your business later, so give them the opportunity to get the information they are looking for.
* Meet people, ask about their business or services. Be curious and ask about them. people love to speak about themselves, so ask questions and listen to their answers.
* Be a problem solver. people will be more interested in you if you tell them how you can solve their problem instead of just hearing your story.
* Go to people; don’t wait for them to come to you. Some people are very shy, they will be very happy if you make the first move.
* Go to events with a friend, a colleague, a client, and introduce people to each other.
* Send a thank you note or email to your new contacts. Thank them for their time and reintroduce yourself in a few lines. They met lots of people during the event and your business card doesn’t say everything about you. So it is good to reinforce your introduction.
* Give them the link to your web site. Tell them about your newsletter, if you have one. This is the best way to stay in touch on a regular basis.
* Schedule follow-up meetings with the people you had a good connection with, or if you think that you can help each other.
* Do it again and again. You will see that networking can expand your contacts, which will definitely help grow your business.

* Be prepared when you attend a networking event.

Stop wasting your time attending every event and start growing your business with networking, learn more about “Power of Networking Secrets”.

In this 7 step program, you will find everything you need on how to maximize your networking results. You will learn: how to create an outstanding business card – how to polish an elevator pitch which will hook your audience so that people will remember you – how to create a 7 step follow-up system to turn more prospects into clients – how to use your newsletter to promote your products or services without hard selling – how to create strategic alliances to grow our business faster.
