A few of months ago I wrote an article “Networking Strategies to Maximize Your Social Networking Results“, in this article I discuss my affinity for online networking. For me since I am in Miami, it is easier to maintain connections with social media compared to the ease of live networking while I was in New York.

For the last 3-4 years, I had my profile on Facebook, Lindedin, Plaxo or Viadeo but became really active only last summer. I spend 2 to 4 hours a week to connect with people online, but until now I was using them more to connect one-on-one. Last week I decided to go to the next level by joining various groups related to my different businesses. I did not just join the groups, but have become an active member by posting messages and answering other users’ posts.

The results were surprising: Within only 2 days, 30 people signed up for my newsletter and more continue each day. I want to take this opportunity to welcome the new subscribers. With more and more people actively using social media and joining groups it’s crucial to maintain an online presence to grow your business. When you join a group, your messages go to all members, making it a great way to be seen by numbers of people at the same time to offer your product or service. By joining groups closely linked to your industry or interests means you are already hitting your target market.

This is the power of networking: you can’t grow on your own alone; you need contacts, prospects, clients, referrals and a very active and effective network.

Recently I had a new client who was looking for contacts in a very specific area. I didn’t have those contacts so instead of telling him “sorry I can’t help you”, I said as always, “let me check my network and come back to you”. I sent an email to a couple of connectors in my network and an hour later I got the contacts I was looking for. After 48 hours of work, conference calls, oversees connections,(between Europe, United State and South America), I helped negotiate a contract that could result in a million dollar deal for my client. It will probably take few weeks going back and forth and sign the contract but this wouldn’t be possible without an effective network.
